History

The Faculty of Chemical Engineering has its origins in the Prague School of Chemical-Technological Engineering founded in 1920 as part of the Czech Technical University. In 1960, the Faculty of Chemical Production, Automation and Economics was established in response to the need of the chemical industry to enhance its process and economic disciplines, as well as its chemical ones. In 1969 it was renamed the Faculty of Chemical Engineering.

Study

The Faculty of Chemical Engineering offers the following forms of study:

  • Three-year BSc study programmes leading to the Bc. title
  • Two-year consequential MSc study programmes leading to the Ing. title
  • Four-year PhD study programmes leading to the Ph.D. title
  • Various types of short-term courses provided within the programme of adult education.

Our Faculty offers full study programmes for foreign students and also programmes for exchange and visiting students.

Research

Research conducted by the departments of the faculty can be divided into six main streams:

  1. Chemical engineering; modelling and experimental verification of systems involving hydrodynamics, mass transfer and/or chemical reactions; dynamics of chemical and biological systems; chemical robotics
  2. Measurement, analysis, modelling and control of processes and systems of chemical technology, biotechnology and bioengineering; information engineering; signal and image processing; computer vision and control engineering
  3. Supply systems management of the food and chemical products: design, modelling and simulation; marketing, logistics and financial collaboration in supply chain management
  4. Molecular modelling and simulation; structural, spectroscopic and thermodynamic properties of environmentally or biologically important substances and their complexes
  5. Physical, physicochemical and chemical measurements and analyses; advanced separation techniques including chromatographic, electromigration and hyphenated techniques; physical and chemical sensors; molecular recognition
  6. Biospectroscopy; atomic spectroscopy together with speciation analysis; molecular spectroscopy, including chiroptical methods; high resolution spectroscopy

During this type of study the student graduates at the University of Chemistry and Technology, Prague.

In compliance with the Bologna system, there are currently three stages of study or study programmes offered by the Faculty of Chemical Engineering:

  • bachelor (3 years, Bc.),
  • master (2 years, Ing.)
  • doctoral (4-7 years, Ph.D.)

Our Faculty of Chemical Engineering offers the following types of study programmes:

Bachelor´s degree programmes

Bachelor´s degree programmes extend for three years. Study programmes are based on core courses embracing general subjects. Graduates are awarded the title "Bachelor" (equivalent to BSc). Diploma Supplement is being issued in a widely spoken European language, given automatically and free of charge to every student upon graduation.

Master´s degree programmes

Master´s degree programmes link up to BSc programmes and take 2 years. Comprise core and specialized courses. Studies lead to the "engineer" degree ("inženýr" in Czech, equivalent to an M.Sc.). Diploma Supplement is being issued in a widely spoken European language, given automatically and free of charge to every student upon graduation.

Postgraduate doctoral studies

Postgraduate doctoral studies leading to a Ph.D. degree lasting nominally four years beyond master studies.

For most of the Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes, subjects are taught and examinations taken in Czech. Nevertheless, an ever growing number of departments is offering courses in English and for the doctoral programmes, depending on the subject, knowledge of Czech may not be a prerequisite.

The aim of the Doctoral studies at the Faculty of Chemical Engineering is to lead students to independent research and to provide them the appropriate qualifications. Every study programme is organized in a full-time (internal) or a part-time (external) mode of study. Standard length of a full-time study course is four years. The maximum length of (a part-time) study course is seven years. Graduates are awarded a Ph.D. title (a Doctorate, „doktor“ in Czech).

UCT Prague admits foreign student to its bachelor degree programmes in a foreign language, providing that applicants have completed secondary education at a level equivalent to Czech secondary education, and possess the required qualifications. An applicant is asked to provide along with the application form a transcript of records from his/her secondary studies (chemistry and mathematics are essential). An admission examination may be required, especially in chemistry and mathematics.

UCT Prague admits foreign student to its master´s degree programmes in a foreign language, providing that applicants are able to prove that they have achieved a bachelor´s degree in a related field of study at a university equivalent to the level of a Czech university. An admission examination may be required.

UCT Prague admits foreign students to its doctoral programmes in a foreign language, providing that applicants are able to prove that they have achieved a master´s degree in either the same or a related field of study at a university equivalent to the level of a Czech university (i.e. M.Sc. or M.A.). An applicant may be required to pass an admission interview.

Application procedure for students who wish to undertake studies in the English language takes place during May. (Foreigners who wish to study in Czech should apply through the Department of Education and the application deadline is March 31st).

In order for an application to be considered complete, the applicant must send official documents, translated in English, if in any other language, certified or verifiable supporting paper documents. The required documents include:

  1. Certified and stamped translation of documents proving the level of education together with a Transcript of records (These must be copies of the original documents which have been stamped by the educational institute and  translated into English by an official translator, where applicable.)
  2. Letter of motivation
  3. Signed Curriculum Vitae
  4. Copy of your passport
  5. Certified translation of Birth Certificate or other document providing evidence of date and place of birth
  6. Recent Health certificate (not older than 2 months) issued by an official health institution
  7. Required field of scientific study or theme of dissertation for doctoral (Ph.D.) study
  8. Certified list of publications or prior application for doctoral (Ph.D.) study
  9. Application form

All enclosures and documentation must be written in English.

During an enrolment week prior to the start of the semester students officially enrol in their classes after they sign a Study Agreement at the Office of International Relations and consequently submit an evidence of tuition fee´s payment. University policy states that the fee must be paid before a student is enrolled (a registration of courses is made). A money order (bank payment order) is the best option for payment.

A student may study at UCT Prague in the English or the Czech language.

Students who wish to study in Czech should apply through the Department of Education ("Pedagogické oddělení"): ped@vscht.cz.

Non-Czech students wishing to study in Czech pass through the same admission procedure as Czech students, and must submit a Czech language certificate proving the necessary Czech language skills. More information is available on the UCT website in Czech version.

Information for Foreign Doctoral Degree Program Applicants

The Faculty offers four-year Doctoral Degree Programs to foreign applicants.

Doctoral studies are presumed for university graduates who have achieved a level of study corresponding to MSc. For applying you need a nostrification of your degree.

In order to be able to assess the student´s previous study results, the Faculty requires a copy of the diploma testifying to previously attained education and a list of courses passed during their university studies with corresponding marks to be attached to the application form. Based on these materials, the Faculty verifies whether the applicant qualifies for the pertinent branch of the Doctoral Degree Program.

Ph.D. students design their own individual plan of study that must list four courses suggested by the supervisor. These courses are compulsory. In addition, optional courses may be added to the plan upon the supervisor´s recommendation. During the initial two years of study, doctoral students attend lectures selected by their supervisors.

Ph.D. students prepare for the State Doctoral Examination that is to test the scope and quality of the students´ knowledge within the entire specialization and their ability to acquire and implement new knowledge creatively. This examination has to be passed within four years from entering the Doctoral Degree Program. At this exam, doctoral degree students are expected to prove their professional theoretical knowledge covering their entire specialization. In order to be able to achieve this goal, they must prepare for this examination throughout the whole period of their study.

Furthermore, Ph.D. students must defend their doctoral thesis. At the beginning of their study, doctoral students select the subject specification for their doctoral thesis and centre their research activities around it.

Ph.D. students must submit their doctoral thesis within the period not exceeding seven years after their registration for study. Thereafter the defence of the doctoral thesis will not exceed seven years.

The Doctoral Degree Program can be studied either in Czech or in English. The form of the Doctoral Degree Program study can be either full-time or part time.

The responsibility of part-time Ph.D. students to study and pass examinations is equal to that of full-time students. However, part-time students take compulsory consultations instead of attending lectures in the semester time. The Ph.D. student´s supervisor determines the number of compulsory consultations per semester. In contrast to full-time Ph.D. students, part-time Ph.D. students have no responsibilities at their departments.

Fees for foreign students studying in English

Fees paid by foreign Ph.D. students studying in English full-time as well as part-time.

The tuition fee for foreign Ph.D. students studying in English is determined in the amount of 45 000 CZK per academic year. The amount of the fee is specified by the Dean in a contract (agreement) with the student. Accommodation, board and health insurance are arranged and covered by the doctoral students themselves.

Ph.D. students studying in Czech do not pay any fee.

Application procedure for students who wish to undertake studies in the English language takes place during May. (Foreigners who wish to study in Czech should apply through the Department of Education and the application deadline is March 31st).

In order for an application to be considered complete, the applicant must send official documents, translated in English, if in any other language, certified or verifiable supporting paper documents. The required documents include:

  1. Certified and stamped translation of documents proving the level of education together with a Transcript of records (These must be copies of the original documents which have been stamped by the educational institute and  translated into English by an official translator, where applicable.)
  2. Letter of motivation
  3. Signed Curriculum Vitae
  4. Copy of your passport
  5. Certified translation of Birth Certificate or other document providing evidence of date and place of birth
  6. Recent Health certificate (not older than 2 months) issued by an official health institution
  7. Required field of scientific study or theme of dissertation for doctoral (Ph.D.) study
  8. Certified list of publications or prior application for doctoral (Ph.D.) study
