Our Student Matouš Tůma Becomes European Champion in Modern Pentathlon
Ing. Matouš Tůma, a student of the Department of Chemical Engineering, has achieved an outstanding sporting success. Together with his teammate Marek Grycz, he claimed gold in the men’s relay at the European Modern Pentathlon Championships, held in late July in Madrid, Spain. And that wasn’t all — Matouš also took home a bronze medal in the team competition alongside other Czech representatives.
A Talented Graduate and Top-Level Athlete
Matouš successfully completed his master’s studies at the Faculty of Chemical Engineering in the summer semester of 2025. His achievements show that balancing the demands of academic life with elite-level sports is challenging but entirely possible — with enough discipline, determination, and commitment.
In recognition of his exemplary ability to combine his studies at UCT Prague with representing the Czech Republic at the highest level in sport, Matouš was awarded the Rector’s Award for 2024. He received the prize from Rector Milan Pospíšil during the university’s traditional Advent concert at Bethlehem Chapel.
Matouš studied Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering at the Department of Chemical Engineering, where he worked under the supervision of Prof. Přibyl, focusing on transport processes and electrophoresis.
We warmly congratulate Matouš and wish him continued success in the remainder of the season — the World Championships in Kaunas, Lithuania, are just around the corner at the end of August.
