History

The Faculty of Chemical Engineering has its origins in the Prague School of Chemical-Technological Engineering founded in 1920 as part of the Czech Technical University. In 1960, the Faculty of Chemical Production, Automation and Economics was established in response to the need of the chemical industry to enhance its process and economic disciplines, as well as its chemical ones. In 1969 it was renamed the Faculty of Chemical Engineering.

Study

The Faculty of Chemical Engineering offers the following forms of study:

  • Three-year BSc study programmes leading to the Bc. title
  • Two-year consequential MSc study programmes leading to the Ing. title
  • Four-year PhD study programmes leading to the Ph.D. title
  • Various types of short-term courses provided within the programme of adult education.

Our Faculty offers full study programmes for foreign students and also programmes for exchange and visiting students.

Research

Research conducted by the departments of the faculty can be divided into six main streams:

  1. Chemical engineering; modelling and experimental verification of systems involving hydrodynamics, mass transfer and/or chemical reactions; dynamics of chemical and biological systems; chemical robotics
  2. Measurement, analysis, modelling and control of processes and systems of chemical technology, biotechnology and bioengineering; information engineering; signal and image processing; computer vision and control engineering
  3. Supply systems management of the food and chemical products: design, modelling and simulation; marketing, logistics and financial collaboration in supply chain management
  4. Molecular modelling and simulation; structural, spectroscopic and thermodynamic properties of environmentally or biologically important substances and their complexes
  5. Physical, physicochemical and chemical measurements and analyses; advanced separation techniques including chromatographic, electromigration and hyphenated techniques; physical and chemical sensors; molecular recognition
  6. Biospectroscopy; atomic spectroscopy together with speciation analysis; molecular spectroscopy, including chiroptical methods; high resolution spectroscopy

Research activities at the Faculty of Chemical Engineering take place in seven departments that have their own educational and research programs in the field of basic and applied research. The research is concentrated in a number of research laboratories and research groups.

The faculty staff is involved in a number of grant projects funded by both internal and external national and European grant agencies. Students are involved in scientific research at all stages of their studies, in internal grant agency projects and under the guidance of their supervisors in other research projects.

The project aims to develop new superhydrophobic materials based on polyvinylidene fluoride and polymethyl methacrylate with different side chains for advanced microbioapplications. Liquid marbles (LM) based microreactors for cancer cell research and LM microabsorbers for selective separation of SO2 and CO2 from gas mixtures will be prepared from prepared nanoparticles and aqueous solutions. Polymer films with an anti adhesive hierarchical surface structure will be tested for the effective inhibition of biofilm growth. The comprehensive experimental characterization of new materials, including the relationship between the conditions of preparation and targeted modification, will be performed. Physico-chemical properties of materials will be determined together with toxicological analyzes of new materials. Obtained results enable to formulate conclusions about procedures and conditions of material preparation and effects of particular types of structures and modifications for the usability of perfluorinated polymeric materials including their impacts on biological systems.

Degree programmes are complete study – students graduate at the University of Chemistry and Technology, Prague.

In compliance with the Bologna system, there are currently three stages of study offered by the Faculty of Chemical Engineering:

  • bachelor (3 years, Bc.),
  • master (2 years, Ing.)
  • doctoral (4 years, Ph.D.)

Bachelor degree programmes

Bachelor degree programmes extend for three years. Study programmes are based on core courses embracing general subjects. Graduates are awarded the title "Bachelor" (equivalent to BSc). Diploma Supplement is being issued in a widely spoken European language, given automatically and free of charge to every student upon graduation.

Master degree programmes

Master degree programmes build on BSc programmes and take 2 years. Comprise core and specialized courses. Studies lead to the "engineer" degree ("inženýr" in Czech, equivalent to an M.Sc.). Diploma Supplement is being issued in a widely spoken European language, given automatically and free of charge to every student upon graduation.

Postgraduate doctoral studies

Postgraduate doctoral studies leading to a Ph.D. degree lasting nominally four years beyond master studies.

For most of the Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes, subjects are taught and examinations taken in Czech. Nevertheless, an ever growing number of departments is offering courses in English and for the doctoral programmes, depending on the subject, knowledge of Czech may not be a prerequisite.

The aim of the Doctoral studies at the Faculty of Chemical Engineering is to lead students to independent research and to provide them the appropriate qualifications. Every study programme is organized in a full-time (internal) or a part-time (external) mode of study. Standard length of a full-time study course is four years. The maximum length of (a part-time) study course is seven years. Graduates are awarded a Ph.D. title (a Doctorate, „doktor“ in Czech).


Studies in the Czech language

Non-Czech students wishing to study in Czech pass through the same admission procedure as Czech students, and must pass a Czech language entrance exam. Study in Czech is free of charge. Application deadline is March 31st.

Studies in English

The tuition fees  apply to students studying in the study programmes taught in English (regardless of their nationality).

Studying under a double degree program enables students to receive two diplomas (one from the home university and one from the partner university) during a shorter time, than if the studies would be done at each university separately.

For foreign students to be part of these programmes at our university UCT Prague has to have a Master or PhD Double Degree agreement with their home university. The two partner universities recognise the courses of the partner university in the particular study program – the study plan of Master or PhD Double Degree is arranged in a way, that students fulfil requirements to receive a diploma at both universities.

Students who successfully finish this program receive two diplomas from two different countries, which gives them advantages for their future career.

Faculty of Chemical Engineering currently offers one Master Double Degree and two PhD Double Degree Programmes.

The Department of International Relations assists foreign students who come to study on the basis of existing agreements between universities, governments, or other institutions. These stays are short-term and students comply with a learning agreement approved in advance by their home universities. During this type of study the student does not graduate (i.e. she/he does not receive a degree and a diploma).

Chemical Robotics Laboratory of Prof. Stepanek (September 2013 - June 2014)

My Erasmus period can be named as adventure film that began on 4th September 2013. I had no idea about what will I do in a different country and culture and friends for ten months. Petrin tower was my first destination that made me feel happy. Prague was laying ahead of us with all its great pomp. At that time, I thought that living in Prague for Erasmus life was the best decision in my life J Erasmus Club of ICT planned really good trips for Erasmus students from the beginning to the end of the term. They were well organized group I have ever seen. Also, all members of the goup was so friendly and helpful for us. I want to thank to each of them for their patience, tolerance and kindness. Except Erasmus club, also my laboratory group planned lots of organizations for me such as climbing, ice skating, cinema nights, parties. Everyday was funny and different than each other for me. Beside these activities, they were also helpful about my experiments in laboratory. I would like to say that I spent the most beautiful times in Prague and ICT in my life.

Bioenginnereing laboratory of Prof. Hasal (February - May 2014)

My time spent in the laboratory gave me an opportunity to discover how enjoyable and rewarding research can be as a means of pursuing an interest in new and challenging ways. My project allowed me to practically apply knowledge acquired throughout my time at university, whilst greatly improving my laboratory skills and ability to interpret technical data. It also enhanced my ability to manage time effectively, work independently and communicate constructively. Professor Hasal and everyone in the laboratory took genuine interest in my progress and provided tremendous support and encouragement throughout.

I chose UCT Prague as the place of my Master's studies after talking to a few students in the final year of my bachelor studies. My fellow students described to me how studying at the university looks like, what the quality of teaching is, the depth of knowledge offered, and what is student life like, in general. In addition to that, I had also visited Prague a few times before and had a chance to admire its magnificent architecture, specific rhythm, interesting nightlife and cultural diversity; basically, all the interesting features that it can offer to a resident, which I really enjoyed. Thus, I had an extra reason to continue my education here.

Shortly after the start of my studies, I realized that I had made the right decision, for many reasons. The study programme is sufficiently flexible and includes a great number of different optional subjects, as well as the obligatory Laboratory Project, where students are allowed to choose a theme they are most interested in and conduct their own research in a particular field - of course, guided by their mentors. Moreover, it is also possible to take numerous language courses (from the introductory to the advanced level), offered by the university's languages department. I believe that it is also worth mentioning that the university's laboratories are very well-equipped, as are the classrooms. Finally, the university cooperates with many European universities and offers many exchange programs to its students, such as Erasmus+, ATHENS, CEEPUS, etc.

To somehow sum up the whole story: I have to say that I really enjoyed the time spent in Prague and at the university, and I really tried to make the most of everything they had to offer. When it comes to future plans, I will continue my education and do my PhD studies here.
